plazma- you have a corporate Isuzu 10-bolt, 4.10 ratio. It has a 7.5" ring gear & is comparable in strength to the 7.5"-7.625" GM 10-bolt or a Dana 30. The Toyota 4x4 rear through '85 is a 6-lug, 8" ring gear, most are 4.10, is the same width as a LUV and stronger, but not up to a Dana 44. The Toyota spring pads are on top of the housing, the drive shaft & E-brakes will need modified.

If you are going to the trouble of changing the rear end just put in what you want (9 inch,12 bolt), why mess with it later. If you dont have time to do it right now when will you have time.

can i change the gears in the stock rear-end?

or is it easier to find a different rear end from an isuzu or some other rear with the same lug pattern. im no longer doing a v8. but still will be needing a decent gear in the back

77pumpkin- yes you can change gears in your stock rear, it's just much easier to change the entire third member. They are only available in 3.42, 3.73, 3.90(very rare), 4.10 & 4.56 ratios.
You say you are no longer going with a V8, are you are staying with the stock 4 cylinder? What about tire size? The 4 cylinder has a narrow power band and is happier revved a bit more than a V8 at the same driving speed, so it would probably be best if the tire size and gear ratio matched the stock final drive pretty closely. If "77pumpkin" means you have a '77 LUV, manual trannies came with 4.10 ratio's.

is there any kind of ID tag on the rear end? i remember on my old ranger they had a little metal tag stamped with some letters and numbers and thats what told you what gears and if it was an open diff or posi.

and im not at liberty to say what motor and trans im gonna use now. but its not the stock one and its not an sbc

No tag and no LSD except '88 & '89 turbo Impulse came with the rare LSD with 3.90 ratio.

i wasnt really implying i had lsd or anything like that. i just didnt know if there was a way to identify the gear ratio

so my 77 2wd 4 speed SHOULD have 4.10s? is that what was meant in the post a few posts up?

i ran a stock rearend, 456 gear welded up behind a sbc 406/th350 with a 3200 stall and 10.5 inch slicks, the rear end held just fine but the u-joints started to explode when it hooked, after that i did the 9" swap.

ok i just put a 408ci small block in my 73 luv. now after reading these posts i understand that a stock rear end will hold the hp i am pushing(530) but im going to have issues with the rear u-joints? if i put a 12bolt in it from a trooper or a pup will i have the same issue or are they bigger?

Cutting down a rear end is really not that hard. A little common sense and everything has to line up. New axles from Moser is another $200.00, but then you don't have to worry every time you stick it a little.
