I used to have a 1990 Ford Ranger STX 4x4. It had the heavy duty borg-warner transfer case and I think it had a Dana 35 front end. The rear diff looked to be about the same size as the 12 bolt in my dads 70 chevy 1/2 ton. Is it a 8.8? It had the removable rear cover. The reason I am asking is because I measured it at one point when I first got my luv, and it was only like a couple inches wider than my luv rear end. It already had the spring packs mounted underneath(I think.) There is one in the junkyard here. If its a 8.8 then I might pick it up. I had a V6 in the ranger with some stuff done to it and I used to burn off in it all the time with some 31x10.50's on it, plus do some serious wheeling and climbing. I never had any problems, so it seemed pretty tough. I actually broke a front axle right in half, but never hurt the rear. Any thoughts?

I meant wheeling as in 4-wheeling, not wheelies. :P
sorry for the confusion. I called the junk yard and he said that the rear end goes for around $320. He said he may be able to give it to me a little cheaper. About how much to have 12 bolt or 9" narrowed, plus the price of one? Its probably cheaper to run the 8.8 isn't it? I may be making 400 hp when I finally get it the way I want it. If I decide to go faster, which I'm sure I will, then I will upgrade accordingly, but that won't be for a long time. I think the 8.8 will hold up right?, if I maintain it good and don't romp on it too much.

I think some rangers had a 7.5" rear end. the 8.8 came in the XLT with 4.0 I think (I'm not a ford guy). if its an 8.8, it should hold up to 400hp just fine. if it breaks, you could go aftermarket gears and carrier and it would definitely hold up.

My cousins mustang had close to 400HP and we launched it at 5000 rpm on slicks at the drag strip over and over and over again (about 32 passes per day at the strip). The 8.8 was fine up til the day it got stolen. they're pretty durable.

I'm not big into ford either, I just happened to have a ranger, it was fairly tough though. I had that truck in some slippery situations, held up fine though. It was tougher than most rangers, it had the heavy duty drive train, plus some after market stuff. I am supposed to call the junk yard again today and find out exactly how much they want for the rear end. He said it is exactly 50" from backing plate to backing plate. Is that too wide? I haven't had time to measure my luv yet, I work 12+ hours a day. plus saturdays. That is why it has taken so long to get the truck done. Also, sorry everyone for my short temper with "foxyluv" yesterday, she just ticked me off after I had already had a bad day.
