Hello,

I originally had this truck regged in nevada where there is no smog, however I am having to bring it to California where they want to smog it.

i know it does not need a catalyst, but I did rip off all the smog stuff when I put the weber carb on.

Am i going to have to put the old POS Hitachi carb on it just to smog it? I imagine re-enabling the EGR, and putting all the air pump grabage back on to get it smogged.

What year is it?

You will need to put all that stuff back on. There are adaptors available to mount the stock air cleaner onto the Weber. You are required to have the stock carb. on there too, but with the stock air cleaner on top of the Weber and the right smog tech...... you might be ok.

And why no Cat.?

Some year LUV's do need cats, but is your luv is a federal truck(49 state truck) as noted on the emisions sticker you will not need it.

I forgot about this post... Where would I get an adapter for the carburetor?

It was originally regged in CA, and it didn't have a cat then, either. The stock carb *barely* makes the truck move, it's a sorry thing. I'd rather buy an adapter and use the stock filter anyway, as this awful cheap "Gauze" job is horrendous.

Looking at the adapters I see online (I cannot buy stuff online, no credit card) they want like $80 for a K&N job, that is just stupid. Should I just weld some sheet metal onto my air cleaner, then-and cut it out with a dremel?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Check the Weber site. They had it somewhere. Or see if a speed shop can get it for you so you can pay cash. It probably is around $50 though. If you think you can make something to work, go for it.

My neighbor made an adapter out of wood, then painted it flat black...it passed smog, the tech didn't even notice he had a Weber on the truck. The truck had a high reading on either the NOX or CO, but it was within legal limits. He drives with a Weber air filter, but when it's time for a smog test he uses his adapter and stock air cleaner.

That's what I like to hear. I took another look at my stock cleaner and it is harder than I thought. A speed shop in town has no idea what I am talking about, so.. They actually have an adapter for a LUV truck?

Look around on the Weber site. They have an adaptor that is round at the top for the stock air cleaner house to mount on. It's not LUV specific.

Well, I have a $900 ticket that can only be cleared up with current registration, and only a few weeks until my extension runs out.

I found a company that had the air cleaner adapter, however when I called them to order it, they had mistaken what I needed for the carburetor adapter, which I already have.

I will get a non op on this truck, use it for target practice, or whatever, and ride my bicycle around if I have to.

I think I mentioned I found an adapter plate from K$N for $90, which is insane.

I guess it's back to looking for a Hitachi carb on ebay or something..

Well, after a miracle I was able to find the adapter I needed, but it is too tall. I was wondering if I removed the choke and butterfuly valve for the choke (Ground the top of the carb flush) if that would affect the carb at all (Obviously I would have no choke). I just need a flush adapter..

FWIW I have run a Quadrajet without a choke in warm weather. Was having trouble with the electric choke, so I just wired it open. Ran bad when it was cold but still started. Eventually went manual choke on it. Anyway I bet you could even pass smog without a choke if your truck's good and hot when the test is done. I would recommend going with the higher temperature thermostat (180 degree I believe) for a smog check. On 80s smog cars they even put in thermostats as hot as 195 degrees to help with emissions. That's what by 82 4x4 full size had.
