I want to hook the 2.2 Isuzu diesel up to my 80 4x4 tranny. If it wont bolt up could the bell housing be modified or is there an adapter plate. I have good mechanical skills and am handy with a mig and arc welder. Just wanting to know how big this project will be before i jump in over my head. Thanks in advance for all of your help. Jeremy

The diesel engine wont bolt up to the gasser tranny, starter on opposite side, bolt up pattern different etc. 1 option you have is to source bellhousing(front caseing) from a diesel and do the swap.

Is the bellhousing section removable or does a guy have to swap tranny guts from one case to the other?

Better back up and think this through. The diesel 5-speed bellhousing will fit the gas 5-speed transmissions, but NOT the 4-speeds (gas or diesel). I don't believe the diesel 4-speed 4wd bell housing is removable, but maybe someone else can shed some light on that question.

Hey if you want I have the four speed trans out of an '82 chevy luv 4x4 and it was bolted to the diesel. Although I have long since taken the diesel out and put it in my '80 luv 2wd but the trans remains. Give me an e-mail if you want to consider this as an option. I am sure that it would make your conversion process a whole lot smoother. My email is truckerforlife@hotmail.com

The swapping of bell housings(front caseing) from gas to diesel on a 4wd trans is done, just the same as you would do on a 2wd trans.

And it will not matter if it is a 4 speed or a 5 speed box as the 5th gear stuff is located behind the 'sandwich' plate.

It does not matter if the box is a 4 or a 5 speed as again this is behind the bearing carrier plate that the front housing bolts to.

Thats not to say there might not be some differences but as yet i have not found one and i have swapped a few over.
