Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone out there has done a 2 ltr 4zc1 impulse turbo conversion. I am just about to put one into my 76 luv and would appreciate any help on this if possible.

I was told it would bolt straight in, but have discovered that I need to modify the mounts and if anyone knows of any other issues I will hit it would be great. Thanks

If you get some mounts off of a truck 2.3L or 2.6L (4ZD1 or 4ZE1) it should bolt right in. The Impulse mounts are fairly different. Other than that, I don't have much more for specific hints.

I got the mounts today and I will be putting the engine in tmoro. It looks like I may need to modify the tailshaft and the gearbox mount.

Thanks for your help. :D

Sounds good, be sure to keep us posted on how it goes. Mechanically it shouldn't be that hard to do, but the wiring and plumbing involved scares most of us off.

I've got a 5spd gearbox out of an 88 Impulse that had a 4ZD1 nonturbo 2.3L motor in it and it looked like it should fit right in place of the LUV's 4spd, but I have not tried to bolt it up yet. The only thing I noticed as an issue was that the spline count on the tranny output was different from the 76 2WD LUV, but it actually matches a lot of other stuff, like the automatic trans found in LUVs, and I believe a lot of GM auto trannies. I figured when I got down to that step I could find a yoke I could swap onto the LUV driveshaft and get it to bolt up.

Just out of curiousity, what year is the donor car you are pulling all this from?

I'd be interested in this myself.... Instead of the 1.9L

This 2.0L will bolt to a 4WD tranny?

I'd much much much rather have a turbo motor.

If its petrol.

If its a C190 diesel you will need to swap the trans for a petrol one. The Diesel has the starter on the opposite side, the Twin Cam motor is the same.

As for the tail shaft issue, swapping yolks is the go. Ive had a look and it should work but as yet i havent done it. Ive got a Trooper 4 speed tail shaft and it looks like i can direct swap the yolk onto the original luv tailshaft. I havent done it because im not sure what im doing with the diff, ive got a Trooper II disc brake diff here i might use. But then ive got 2 LSD centers here that will fit the luv diff. I do want to widen the rear tack by 2-3 inches.

OZluv, what trans are you using??? The 4 speed auto???
The AW03-72L auto is longer than the manual boxes. The trimatic is shorter.

Hi Bob,

I am using the Piazza 5-speed, my Luv already had a 5-speed and I only needed to swap the shifter mechanism from the Piazza over to the luv's original. I only had time to bolt the engine in and am hoping the tailshaft slides straight in!

And 800xl, the donor car is an 86 impulse.

I will let you know how I go with the tailshaft etc. tmoro.

Anyone with some advice please post as it will be very helpful.

Thanks

I've got a pretty similar set up coming together, a 77 LUV with an 88 Impulse/Piazza 5 spd. I think you will find a combination of bits that will make it come together without fabricating a driveline together.

Hi all,
I have hit some trouble with getting the engine and box to fit in without fabricating new mounts or tailshaft. I have tried the mounts off a g200 but the engine sits way to far forward and even the 4ze1 mounts make the engine sit about 10mm to far forward. The engine sits in ok, the dizzy is touching the firewall (but a hammer can fix that) but it will not bolt onto to the gearbox mount. Does anyone have any suggestions?????

And Ihave tried 4zd1 mounts but they are basically the same as the g200!

Thanks!

Grab a welder and some steel and build your own frame and trans mounts. It's not as hard as you think if you take your time. There are allot of people on this site that have had to make there own mounts to install V-8s just to save money or like in mine and your case using an engine that is not the norm.

I would suggest you slot the holes 5mm front and 5mm back if they wont line up. Easy enough to do with a hand file.
And you wont have to touch the tailshaft it will be within tolerance, 10mm either way wont matter.

Just a quick update (have been flat out at work and been neglecting the luv). Anyway, in the end had to get one of the engine mounts modified to take the Impulse oil pump, ended up using the 4ze1 mounts and modified the gearbox mount and tailshaft to make it fit nicely.

In the process of putting all the wiring back in and getting it running again. Thanks for all the help and I will post some pics next week when it all done. :D

Can anyone tell me exactly what a short wheelbase luv weighs, the engine plate says 2.25 t , but that seems completely wrong. I figured they would weigh about 1 t!

Thanks

poopy pounds

1300kg. + or -

The tare weight should be on your rego label.

2.25T sounds about right for your gross. Take a ton off that and it sounds like your tare will be 1250kgs.

I would have thought it would be a little heavier but it could be right, my space cab is 1400kgs or something.

Just to add a bit to all of this...when I converted my 78 2wd truck from a stock 4 speed to a 5 speed tranny from an 86 Pup, the output shaft of the stock 4 speed was a 10 spline and the output shaft of the 86 Pup was a 17 spline. So you can easily change front yokes, since the u-joints are exactly the same, and it all should bolt right in.

As for the Impulse/Piazza 1.9 G200 engine - everything from a stock 1.8 will bolt right up to it.
