I am swapping the motor in my 76 LUV and was wondering if it makes sense to use the fuel injection that came with the 84 impulse motor ?

It makes the swap a whole lot more complicated in terms of wiring, but if that doesn't scare you off then by all means go for it. You'd end up with more power and a smoother running truck, but there is ALOT of wiring to transfer over and deal with. It might also have an effect on smog testing too. Swapping just the block and head won't look different from stock unless someone really knows what to look for. The injection system will make them look all that much harder at it, if it is even allowed where you are.

I looked into the injection setup when I put my Impulse engine in my 78 stepside, and immediately passed on the idea. It was just going to be way too much hassle for me.

I opted to go with a weber 38/38 carb instead, and used the electronic ignition module/distributor from an '82 luv, added a header, a higher output accel coil, and a 50 amp alternator. I also added a slightly bigger cam re-ground by Delta, added a pacesetter header, and put in all new 2 1/2 inch exhaust pipe - and my truck runs way better than it did with the old stock G180.

I don't know if all of that would get you past smog testing - but even putting all of the stock G180 stuff on the Impulse engine has got to be a huge improvement. Plus if you use your old G180 head, you will end up with even higher compression, and no one will ever know.

Thanks guys, I'd be in way over my head without you all. Either way it's gonna cost if I don't use the hitachi carb, I suppose I would need to decipher an impulse wiring diagram to figure out the extra hardware I would need to use the injection... I think I should figure out the best ignition upgrades while I'm at it. My motivation is primarily fuel economy, but the original motor was gutless!

To be honest with you, the mileage I'm getting now isn't a heck of a lot different from what I was getting before.

I'm thinking because I have more power, I don't have to push it so hard to get up hills and get up to warp speed so it's probably why it's gas mileage is just about the same.

I installed a 5 speed and newer Pup rear end too (which I had before I switched engines) so that helps some too.

All things considered it a heck of a lot of fun to drive.

The G200Z with EFI in the Impulse has higher compression than the carby motors allready.
