Wanted to go to electronic ignition on the 80, but Pertronix said they did not make an ignitor that would fit it. They had parts that would fit a 79, and earlier. Picked up a 79 distributor from the junk yard and ordered the parts. Looking at both distributors, I didn't see much, if any difference. Installed the parts in the 80 and it worked fine. Here's a quick run down of the install.

Remove the points and the little rubber do-hickie .
Bolt in the module assy.

Install the reluctor ring. I put a very little bit of dielectric grease inside the ring to make it easier to install. It has flats that have to line up with the distributor shaft.

Didn't like the way the grommet was allowing the wires to lay there. It did not fit the slot very well. Drilled the original feed through with a 1/4" bit. The grommet fit this quite well.

Black wire on the negative side of the coil and Red on the power feed of the ballast resister.

It fired right up, but timing was advanced a good bit. Adjusted that. Also the dust cover no longer fits.

Here are the part numbers:

18433 Reluctor Ring
16430 Module Kit

Got them from Summit, they had to special order them.

Very cool. Thanks for the step by step. I might be doing this soon.

Excellent pics.

I have had the 1741 kit in my 79 since March, took a bit more modification to get it in, but it runs great.
Guess Pertronix finaly got around to making a LUV kit for other than 72-74.

Good job!

FYI...If you run a heavier guage wire from your alternator to your battery, and replace your fuseable links with blade fuses, you can use a 50 amp alternator that every parts store stocks for the Luv at same price as a stock 35 amp one. They are made for Luvs with air conditioning. I've never had any problems with my voltage regulator either

(BTW...I used large 50 amp fuses and large blade fuse holders because I hate replacing fuses...lol)

Plus Accel makes a slightly higher output coil for around 30 bucks that fits the Luv and won't harm your new electronic ignition.

That might help perk up your spark a bit.

Just my $.02 worth...

Thanks guys. Thought the info might be useful to others.

tumwatertaz

Will probably try a hotter coil. Do you have a part number for it?

Good info on the alt also.

Naw...but it's the only high performance coil Accel makes for the Luv, Imark, Pup, or the Impulse with the G series engines for around $30.00. (If you want to spend 5 or 10 more bucks you can get it in chrome...lol)
