First off I am brand new here, so I'm sure this has been covered but i'm going to ask anyhow. I'm the new owner of a 1980 4x4. This is my second LUV, the first was a 79' 4x4. This truck runs but it's pretty tired. Now I like go fast stuff just as much as the next guy, but i'm just looking for an everydayer to drive. At $3 a gallon I'd like to find a good 1.8 to stick back in there, but I've got access to a good 350. The cheapest I've been able to find reman 1.8s is 1K. Does anyone know any good places to find good motors? With it being a 4x4 I assume the 350 swap is going to be more expensive. Any info would be greatly appriciated.

Swapping the engine to a small block is a ton of work. The trans you have is combined to a transfer case, so if you do a motor upgrade you will need a different trans and transfer case. There used to be a guy on e-bay that was selling rebuilt motors for about a grand but we here have never herd any feed back on him. I would pull your motor and rebuild it yourself. These G180Z motors are simple, with a good manual you could easily be under a grand doing the work yourself. I just finished building one with my wife, they are a piece of cake and if you are doing the labor it is cheap.
