Dose the fan shelled make a big difference in keeping the motor cool

yes, it helps pull the air directly to the center of the radiator.

yeah you need it so the air is pulled properly by the fan.

Yes. You need a fan shroud.

My 78 was doing fine without one, but I happened upon one so we put on there.

same here drove for 2 years with out one and never had a problem . when i did the rebuild i found one and it does run cooler by a little bit
