Ive got a 1980 isuzu KB (Chevy Luv). The person before me has replaced the front discs with drums. So now I have drums allround. My problem is that my brake pedal goes almost to the floor before it will start to brake. Im just wonernig how you go about adjusting the fron drums breaks on like a 75 luv or something.

I have adjusted my rear drums but the front are not the same anf adjust differently. The rears have only 1 wheel cylinder per drum and the fronts have 2 wheel cylinders per drum.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,
Phil

there should be a little slit in the backing plate somewhere. Insert a screw driver and tighten up the wheel thats there.

I thought they were supposed to be self adjusting for the most part. You pull forward stop back stop, repeat a dozen times or so and that should do it. I know there is a way to get them close to adjusted on the rears, but I don't recall on the fronts and I forgot to check my service manual when I got home from work last night. I'll try to remember to look tonight and post up whatever procedure I find. It has been many years since I worked on a LUV with front drums.

As for the why, if the discs were REALLY bad, and drums was the ONLY thing you could find for parts, it might be better than nothing, but only just barely.

The original drum front brake system has a unique adjuster set up. There's a tab on the spring that rides on the teeth of the adjuster plate. The best way to describe it is that it works like a bumper jack. The reason that they wont work is because theres air in the system.
I would recommend that you bleed the brakes. The front brakes have a total of 4 wheel cylinders and any air will raise hell on the brakes. It took me forever to find out the problem with mine until i had help from someone that knew to keep the pedal down until the bleeder was closed.
