I have heard all kinds of bull stuffin story's about the gear ratio in these LUV trucks....anyone have any clue at what they really are??? My "little book" says that they came stock with 4.56 is that true??? My 4x4 when I can get the thing to run shure does like to climb them dar' trees!! LOL!!
First gear, 4 low, I'M CLIMBING JUST ABOUT ANYTHING I WANT!!
You go to the wrecking yard and hear all kinds of "CRAP" about this and that and that and this.. I would like to really know the scoop on just what gears these little trucks have in them!!

My 1980 Factory shop manual lists 4.10:1 as the only 4x4 gear ratio. Whith 3.73s being availiable for 2wds. It would also be possible for someone to have swapped in 4.55 third members from a trooper like im getting ready to do :)

4x4 79-80 are 4.10 from the factory. If in doubt jack up a wheel and count revs to be certain. I doubt you would find anything else in a 4x4 of that age, swapping the front 3rd is not an easy task, and there aren't many options available (4.56 and 4.10 are basically it) The rear could be anything from 3.73 to 4.56 though depending on the year of LUV it came from.

Stay tuned for more though, I'm working on an info piece that will cover ratios and much more.

I WAS AFRAID OF THAT!! THATS JUST THE STUFF I GET AT THE WRECKING YARDS. BUT, ITS ALRIGHT THOUGH. I WILL SURVIVE!!
MY LITTLE BOOK TELLS ME THAT THE 4X4'S CAME WITH 4.56 GEARS AND SO IF I REALLY WANT TO FIND OUT I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO JACK THE THING UP, GET A HELPER TO TURN THE WHEEL AND COUNT THE REVOLUTIONS AND FIGURE IT OUT. ITS NO BIG DEAL I WAS JUST KIND OF CURRIOUS WHAT THESE LITTLE TRUCKS CAME WITH.
THANKS FOR ALL THE RESPONCE.

4.10 is per the factory service manuals. If you are looking at a Haynes, Chilton, or Clymer shop manual they don't really have the right info in them. LUVs changed gear ratios several times over the years, and the generic shop books just don't cover every exact detail like that.

I used to have a factory manual that showed all available ratios. Damned if I can find it now. If memory serves me correct: 72-75 were 4:56, 76-78 were 4:10, 79-80 were 3:73 for 2wd and 4:10 for 4wd.
