:?: My son son and I are trying to replace the front CV axles (full axles) on his 1980 4x4. We started on the drivers side, long axle. Pulled everthing that the Chiltons (at least they show the axles) and the Haynes (they don't show 4x4 axles) show in the manuals. So...is there a retainer snap ring behind the axle flange? Do we have to pull the whole front axle assembly to replacle the axles. I read past posts back to page 15 and have found no help.

in order to replace the entire axle shaft assembly you have to drop the axle tube off the frame. There is a braket on either side that holds the axle tube to the frame and also holds the shafts into the tube. But the inner birfield joint has a ring in it that allows that joint to be pulled apart. So as long as that outer half of the joint isnt broken you can just do that and stuff the new joint in there.

Thanks, I thought that would be the course of action. Now I know what I'll be doing tomorrow. Any idea where I can get hub bolts, had to drill the heads off 4 of them to take the hub off. We bought standard metric bolts and plan to file each one down to fit the 10mm wrench size and clearance the hub plate. Assume we'll run into the same problem on the other side too.

I replaced my stock hubs with Super Wench aftermarkert. Since I had some of the bolts messed up, I tapped the holes and then took an old bolt and got some bolts with Alan head bolts. They are round heads not like the stock ones and fit better.
