I'm running a stock pump with mine right now and i haven't had any problems, but it also depends on the motor's needs. i figure my motor is making around 250hp, but thats just my guess. If you're going for higher power then you'll probably need more fuel

im going to be running a holley blue electric pump.
there are inline pumps that will go where the stock one goes if you want to replace it.

I have had several sbc all with stock mechanical pump. I would remove original pump and replace it with a line or hose so the mechanical pump does not have to pull through the electric pump. Some people have forgot to take electric pumps out of the line when not being used and I have seen it work and I have seen it cause problems. Keep in mind fuel pumps are made to push not pull. Notice filters(not strainers) are always after the pump in factory vehicles(electric or mechanical). If the filter is before the pump move it.

This does not apply to High performance type filters and pump. They are done a little different. They recommend a short line from fuel cell to a FREE Flowing filter to pump.

After market electric.

install an oil pressure switch, if the oil pressure goes, it wont pump fuel till the tank is dry.
