I heard someone say that Mallory Unilite makes a electronic distributer for a Chevy Luv. I am curious do they make one for a 1980 model. If so where can I get one of these at. If they do not make one for the 1980 model Chevy Luv who does and where can I get one.... Jason

Thanks a million. Is it electronic? Does it work very well? How hard is it to install? As far as the wiring goes on it. Can you hook a super coil to it? Sorry, I am asking so many questions. I am just so excited about finally finding out where I can get one at. Thanks again....Jason

You should also take a look at the article regarding later model Isuzu electronic ignition swaps in the info section of the main luvtruck.com site. If you can find a donor, the swap is pretty simple and should come in under the price of a Mallory. Here is the link:

You're right, XL, it's cheaper, but I've listened to failure stories of transistorized ignition since the day it came out, and I alway assumed where there's smoke there's fire.

Yeah, it is a cheaper way to go, but you are swapping in used parts. You could buy the parts for the swap new, but then you might as well go for a well designed kit like the mallory.

I've often wondered why Pertronix didn't follow thru with their conversion kit for the rest of the LUV series. I had it on a 1972 Ford F250 for 20 years and it never failed me. And the plugs lasted forever.

So Pertronix #1741 only fits 74-75?

I thought their kits included back to 72 LUVs. You can send them your distributor and they'll make a kit to fit, but what do you drive in the meantime? Back in the late 70s I paid $20 for the one I put in my F250.

72-73 had the dual point setup. It seems to me though that you could put in a 74-75 single point style disti, might take some minor rewiring but it would physically fit.

It also seemed to me that the 74-75 style disti was very similar to the 76-80 one, just had a different shaft and body. I'll have to look at my books and spare parts and see. I would think if it would fit they would have listed it for the newer style motors though.

OOPS! I forgot about the dual points. Maybe Pertronix thought it would be to much of a hassle to make a kit for that distributor. I would've bought a kit for my 80 4X4 in an instant if it would've been available.
