i sent pixs but they haven't been posted yet. its only been 2 weeks tho..... any how; my alernator on my stock 1980 chevy luv 4x4 is bad. i have factory ac and radio. its stock 1.8 ltr engine, with the manual tranmission.

heres my question; does anyone know if its a 35 amp or 50 amp alternator?

i wanna avoid excess trips walking to auto zone. i haven't gotten it out of the truck because "my mechanic"(friend who i begged)isn't ready to work on it yet. i'm trying to get everything ready .

my mother in law says theres no such thing as the alternator belt, that its just a reg belt put on the alternator;
i say no there is such a thing
whos right?

With factory ac it should be the 50.
As for the belt...well why don't we compromise and say it's a v-belt. Or possibly as the factory manual calls them "Drive belts"

I would think you could just ask for the alt. belt for a ??year and ??motor for a luv. Shouldnt be any more complicated than that.

Actually from what I saw on my 79 the A/C and non-A/C alts are exactly same, but the A/C version has a smaller pulley so it turns faster. It is hard to tell for sure if they are internal identical, but that is all I can see for differences.

The parts book does show different part numbers for a lot of the internal and external parts though, including the case. It didn't look different to me though, and the smaller pulley would explain the boosted output.

Every place I checked lists the same voltage reg for A/C and non, so it should not make any difference which you use when replacing the alt.
