Once I pull off the front cover of my Hubs I can see that there is a little spring missing. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a replacement?

There are three springs in the 4WD hub assembly. Two are inside the hub body as part of the works. Both work in pushing the clutch mechanism in and out of engagement. They are a bit more than an inch around, and one is fairly compressed and the other has some space between the coils. Replacements for either of them are going to have to come from a dealership (not likely, but you could check) or out of a junkyard donor. You might try the parts department at http://isuzu.stcharlesauto.com/ they are very helpful and known for being able to locate hard to find parts. The part number for the compressed spring is 94028150 and the one that is more expanded is 94028149, if they need the group number for both is 6.308

There is a small spring located in the selector switch too. It pushes a little ball outward from the center so that there is a detent at lock and free positions. This one you might be able to find a suitable replacement at a hardware store. The Isuzu/GM part number for this one is 94028148

FYI, these part numbers show the same for 79-82 LUVs. There are a few items that are different in the hubs on the older and newer body styles, but these bits are not one of them.

If you really are missing a part in your hub, I would be concerned that something else might be missing too. If you don't already have it, pick up a Haynes repair manual (most local shops still have them on the shelf for the LUV) and go through all the parts. There is a bunch of stuff in there and it most all needs to be in there for them to work.

I appreciate everything. You really know your stuff about this.

The spring isnt missing it is just broken. Hopefully I can find something that will work. Because this won't let it engage so I have no 4 wheel drive right now.

Haynes manual isn't to swift. I found a factory shop manual on ebay for 20 bucks for my 4x4 (80)

I agree that the factory manual is way better, but harder to find. The Haynes for the LUV is probably about the best Haynes manual I've seen though, most of the rest of them are not nearly specific enough. The one they did for the LUV is really good by comparison to Haynes books on other rigs, but there is no substitute for a factory manual. The Clymer and Chilton's LUV books are almost identical to the Haynes, though the Clymer has a bit better info on 4x4 and the newer (81-82) models. I have not seen a Clymer or Chilton's for sale other than ebay in years though.

I guess I'm just saying the Haynes book is worth having, but yeah get a factor manual if you can.

On that spring, I would try the local GM dealership. They can still get a few parts and you might run into one with some old stock still on their shelves. Armed with the part number you should be able to give them enough to know if they have it or check with other dealers who might. St Charles is really good with Isuzu parts and worth checking with too, but I don't know how much they can do on older LUV/Isuzu KB stuff. There is a guy named Merlin in their parts department who lives up to his name. He's a wizard at finding things no one else can.

It is also possible that a spring from another similar hub could be used. I'm not sure what other rigs had ASCO hubs in them, but something of the same vintage with them would have very similar parts. Usually only the inner clutch assembly is different to match the splines on the axle. A hub rebuild kit for a different make might have exactly the same spring in it. Worth checking with local parts stores too.

My gut says you are going to be getting a hub from a donor truck though. I'll see what I have in my parts bin too. I know I have some hub parts that came with a nearly stripped 4x4 parts truck. They aren't complete, but maybe the spring is there. Which one do you need?

Aww shucks. I actually feel like I've been slacking some lately, so I end up doing these cranium dump answers like this thread. If I bother to hit reply, I figure I better make sure I cover everything. Hope it helps.

Why don't you just replace the hubs with superwinch locking hubs.
Here is their web site you just need to find a dealer and when you look them up you need to look use up to 85 Isuzu Pickup. I had a problem with my hubs so I changed them. Check out my truck at the bottom of the Gallery.(Kelly Mathews)

P/N for the Kit 400522 with 2 hubs

this site list them for the luv and they are $109.50

Going to superwinch hubs is a good idea, but $100 is hard to swallow as the fix for a little broken spring. If you can't get the $2 spring though, I guess you have to do whatever it takes.

But being a broke college kid i cant afford it. I bought the truck for $400 and it runs perfect after replacing the crud filled gas tank. All it needs is some fine tuning to get everything back to perfect. I appreciate all of yalls help.

They are very good hubs. One of the reasons I changed mine is because they didn't want to lock. I went to the dunes in AZ and would lock the hubs before driving in sand, I could feel the front of the truck sinking and would have to stop to get the hubs to engage ( not a good idea) I didn't have this problem with the Superwinch.

Hey I found a set of hubs on e-bay for $25. The Auction has 6 days left on it.

Here is the link Ebay hubs

Not too bad of a deal, but you never know what you'll get. If they are both good you could get the part you need and still have a full spare hub to use as a trail spare.

I did check around in my parts and did not find any of the springs. I'd have to pull a full hub off a complete truck. I have some random hub parts that came with one of my parts trucks, but the springs are among the missing parts.
