Being an electrician for 9 years forced me to develop the trait of severe distaste when electrical systems (read: any electrical system) does not function properly. When I bought my Luv 2 days ago, the person knocked off $50 from the price because when he was bringing the truck over to me, it wouldn't start because the resistor on the coil was bad. He also told me that the instrument panel lights weren't working and he had eliminated the fuse as a possible fault.

So, I took his word for it and ripped the bezel out (I do mean ripped because one of the wing nuts was stuck) just to find out that there wasn't even a fuse in the block for those lights. The good part is that now my gauges and bezel are spotless. Downside is that I have a broken bezel. If anyone has one that they can send me, I'd be interested. I also found a wiring mess that I now have to clean up. The blinkers were cut and wired to separate switches mounted on a plastic panel, and the running lights are wired to a switch that is laying on the dashboard. I'm going to try and relocate all of this to the original switches if I can figure out what happened to the original wiring. I suspect that the factory flasher relays went bad, and he looked for the cheap fix.

Ok, now on to the resistor on the starter coil. I replaced it with a universal one from NAPA, and the system didn't like it at all. Now, until I can find an original replacement I'll have to short the resistor to start it when it's cold and then remove it for normal running once it starts.
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to vent and shed some light upon some problems that occur in many vehicles (those which some of you are already painfully aware). Other than electrical problems, my truck is great, and the only things that I really need to do are move the seat back (I'm 6'0" with the legs of someone 6'3") and replace the steering wheel (with something "Grant") with a horn system rework (air horns possibly, the current system is inoperable).

Take it easy,
Jon :silly:

As for the bezel, what part are you referring to exactly? I have the whole instrument cluster for my '76 still.

I looked up the schematic for my '76 and it has a "resistor bypass relay" that automatically bypasses the ballast resistor for starting. Most vehicles have a bypass so I wanted to look that up for you. It may be malfunctioning, missing, or disabled.

Good call! Thanks Ben. I was working out of my Haynes manual, but when I read your post, I pulled out the Clymer manual and looked in another diagram. Low and behold, the relay was there. Also, the path to that relay was highlighted. This leads me to believe that this is a previous and ongoing problem that I get to deal with. If it's a simple relay replacement, I'll be relieved. Do you have any idea as to the location of that relay. I'll look in my book, but, if you know, please share.

Thanks again, Ben! Why didn't I think of that? I saw the other wire on the post, couldn't think of where it might have come from, and didn't have time to trace. So...

Oh yeah, the bezel. It is the front trim piece that covers the plexi shielding. It has the studs that fasten the whole cluster in place. I'm thinking that eventually I might fab one out of sheetmetal and use autometer gauges. I don't know yet though.

Thanks,
Jon :silly:

Ah, that sucks. Mine is missing the studs. I remember now that my speedometer cable used to keep it from falling out. LOL!

i think wireing is one of THE most common faults of the luv. just ask luvforme  he rewired his ENTIRE truck. as for all the jerry rigging you had on yours thats not bad, my first luv (81 2wd) shorted out damn near everything afater i hit the 1st tree w/ it (hit 3 total :? ) i had 5 toggle switches across the dash  taillights, blower fan, domelight, dashlights and fuel pump.
starting the thing was like starting up a airplane or somethin

LUV #8495 you have permission for take off on runway 3 1.

well I didn't re-wire the whole thing.....just about 80% of it....hehe

I don't see why anyone would bypass a flasher....they only cost like 3 or 5 dollaz.

Kuran check my website out down there |
V
you can see my shetmetal cluster
with autometer gauges.

I tried your website, but angelfire is down. It said check back in about an hour. Since you did your re-wiring, maybe you can help me wiht a couple of questions. Where are the stock flashers located? And, where can I find the starting coil resistor bypass relay? Any help on this would save me a great deal of time and discomfort digging under things in the truck.

TIA

the stock flashers are just to the right of the steering column mounted on the big clutch/brake bracket.

there are 2 relays on the passenger side fenderwell. one is for the fuel pump and the other might be what you are wanting. they might be under a cover.

Thanks a lot! I;ll check that out after I get out of class tonight. also, I just looked at your websight. The guage cluster looks great! How did you make the template for the panel? I'm thinking all of that over now. If you can let me know, I'll really appreciate it.

Thanks again!

sorry about that last post. foot med's are still treating me nice. :? 8O

If a Besel is the plastic guage piece, I bought a piece of 1/2" aliuminum sheet metal. traced it to match, cut it out, and hole sawed all the guages in place. Blinkers, high beams. two small threaded studs and wing nuts in the stock location and your set. they paint well.

One trick when holesawing aluminum is to keep it well lubricated,(yes, i said lubricated) other wise the hole saw, (saw blade-whatever) will get clogged up, and dont let it get too hot, it gets clogged.

Thanks, did the sheetmetal line up with the left hand air vent ok, or did you use some sort of spacer? That was one of my concerns. If it isn't flush, oes it look ok?

Ok, I go to NAPA and try to get the flashers I need to revamp my blinker circuit, and low and behold, the part I get is the same unmountable type of crap that I already have free-hanging in there from the last guy. I have to pull the ones that are in there and see if they are the same ones. I would really like to have the factory type that can be mounted. Also, the resistor bypass that I need cannot be found so I'm comparing a couple of schematics that they gave me to see if some others will work.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but if any of you know where to get these relays and such, please let me know.

Thanks,

Well In all honesty if you do find the fuel pump relay let me know I went to Schucks, Napa, and Carquest and none of them have it or could find it! so I had to end up just wiring it and putting it on a toggle switch. I have also replaced the flashers Mine had two separate???? dont know why but I just looked at the #'s on them and got them from Schucks for a few bucks a piece. Hope this helps ya a little.

The new ones. I just want to know if they have mounting brackets, and, if so, what the part numbers are.

Thanks
