i have a stock engine and my ignition points and distributor points keep frying, i replaced the points and condensor and the points melted within 5 kms. i attached the old condensor and didnt have a problem til recently, i went on a long drive interstate and it happened again. what could be causing this?

If the coil is not running through a resistor it could cause the points to fry pretty fast. With the truck running you could check the voltage between the + side of the coil and a ground (- post of the battery would be good since its close) If it is 12 volts then the coil isn't being powered through the resistor when the motor is running. When everything is working right, the coil gets full 12 volts when the key is turned to START via a relay. Then when the key is released to ON and the motor is running power to the coil is routed through the resistor. The relay is one of those under that mystery metal cover on the left inner fender.

yeah your right, it was the resistor, i wasnt running one at all. i spoke to an auto elec and he told me how to rig one up, basically putting it allong the + of the coil.
