 Post subject: blown fuse
PostPosted: Mon Jan 24, 2005 5:38 am
My Luv has been acting up again. coming home the other night my generator light came on and my gauges stopped working.. pulled over and I had a fuse blown, I think the cover said heater, backup lights (third fuse from firewall), I switched it with another, light goes out, gauges work. hit highway, fuse blows again.. this time I don't stop, made it home (25 miles) headlights never dimmed and nothing else seems affected.. Drove it yesterday with new fuse, put about 20 miles on it before it blew again.. Any ideas, kinda need my daily driver back on the road worry free...

Assuming the fuse is the correct size, it's slowly heating up becuz of a slow drain of current "down stream" from it. Usually a high resistance ground caused by corrosion somewhere causes this. One at a time, disconnect the things operating off this fuse until it stops blowing. This will narrow the problem down. Backup lights you said: could be the connectors up there, what with all the mud, water, & road salt that get thrown up there by the tires.

Maybe your alternator is charging too much.

do you have a newer stereo installed in the truck? i put my pioneer in mine and after a few weeks the wire that i ran through the firewall to the batt. shorted out....it blew the heater- back-up fuse and the regulator fuse....my truck died on the side of the road and too top it all off this happened with one of my employees being rushed to the hospital cause he got smacked with a wrought iron gate and needed 12 stiches in his head.

if you've passed anything through the firewall check the wires...on another note check the ground wire coming off the blower motor it could have a bad connection causing the motor too use too much juice when it's on.....keep in mind that the blower has no real off setting and any time the engine's running it's drawing juice

I still say that it probably is a high resistant short caused by corrosion. They are difficult to find. I use to do this shit in the Air Force for nearly 20 years. Aircraft electrician on everything from B-36s to FB-111s. A lot of guys here have had trouble with the fuse block. I've been lucky. None yet. Dismount it from the fender wall, put a dry rag under it, and tape it down with duct tape and see if the fuse blows.
