My front brakes are locking up when I just touch them. They feel fine when the truck isn't running. I pluged all the smog BS and was wondering if i'm pulling to much of a vaccum on the booster?

it being a 79 it is prolly disk.
it might be a frozen up caliper, or the brake line has collapsed.
if you jack it up can you rotate each wheel with ease?
if you can't, loosen the brake bleeder screw. can you rotate it now? if so it is a collapsed brake line.
if you can't rotate it easier it might be the caliper.

Hey all,
My 81 had a sim prob, Mine had a shim/center peice that relocated itself somehow between the outside edge of the piston and the pad, It was only on one side, Even thought bout touching the brake," :o K were going left"
Hope this helps...

I'm in the middle of converting mine to disc and i was wondering about the metal shims off of the old pads...do i need to put them on with the new ones or i can leave em off ? I was looking at them and I don't see the purpose of them.

you can take them off but you won't know if your brakes are low.that's why brakes squel when you low.

No these just wrap around the metal on the back of the pad..they dont stick out over the pad. besides the pads have tabs on them for the squelling. Oh well I'm gonna leave em off anyways.

I left the shims off of mine when I cleaned the calipers and I'm not sure what the hell they are for. I changed the booster ran all new fluid through all the brakes. still not working properly. Just not enough time to check everything I want to after work. I'll take a better look this weekend. thanks for all the advice.

We had an Izusu Pup Diesel at the last place I worked that we used as a delivery truck. Cool truck, got awesome gas mileage. But the brakes were touchy. I don't know how many times I locked up the tires by accident on that thing. I pulled everything apart one day and couldn't find anything wrong.

I guess they're supposed to be that way, but man. You get some strange looks when your on the freeway and everyone starts slowing down, and you hit the brakes a little too hard and lock 'em up. Everyone looks at you like, "OK, I'll just stay away from him".
