 Post subject: U-Joints???
PostPosted: Mon Jan 17, 2005 11:25 pm
I've got a '79 2WD. I'm getting some significant vibration while driving. I checked the joints and really didn't find anything out of the ordinary. Does anyone know how much play you can expect out of your joints? Also, how much play in your rear end? :?

U-joints can cause vibration. I know. I came back from Nevada with a bad one. Set the emergency brake and shake both of them hard side to side and up and down. There should be no play. With the tranny in neutral, twist the drive shaft in each direction. They'll keep going with even a loud, significant clunk for a long, long time. Some play in each direction is normal. But none up and down. or side to side. That'll ruin the seal and the diferential will go dry and so will your wallet.

is your 79 a longbed or short because it could be the center (carrier) bearing.

It's a short-bed. Good thought though!
