Are my timing markes on the crank gear and the cam gear supose to face each other?
I rebuilt the motor and head put it all back together I took all the smog crap off and changed points and now it back fires through the carb when it's idling. it's 1.8 thanks

if its like the timing on my 1.8 (1980) the mark on the crank points a a sliver link on the chain and the mark on the cam points at another silver link, its a bitch to time
also its a "interferance" eng meaning if it get too far outta time or the chain breaks and the crank keeps turning it will bend the valves w/ the pistons. this is what happened to me, chain broke, bent the valves, so now is time for a v6

Thanks for the advice I'll try to restab and take another look at the chain and see if i need to reajust my valves.

i just rebuilt mine about 2 months ago and ran into the same problem.check the timing on your distributer .i have no clue on how to fix this exept to turn your dis. i watched my dad do it to mine and the backfiring stoped emediatly
