Well, its time to replace that blown muffler and get a new unit. I was thinking something slightly more performance oriented, as i'd like to go uphill occasionally, and i took her into NAPA to see what they had for me. The guy said he has a stock muffler, or a glass pack. They cost the same, and he said that the glass pack exhaust is much less restrictive, but it's pretty much luck of the draw, and i wouldn't know how it would sound until it's on. I'm kind of trying to avoid the real loud, weed-whacker on crack effect of a rice burner, but being a little louder than stock would be nice. What i'm asking is, has anyone put a glass pack on a stock 1.8, and are there any affordable alternatives? I'm scheduled for tomorrow evening, and i'm a little late asking, but if anyone can respond in the next 18hrs or so, i'd appreciate it.

Go w/ the glass pack :!: it will be a lil louder than stock but nothing like most rediculous sounding import cars. I have glasspack on my 80 4x4 and have ppl asking all the time "Do you have a 6 cyl in that thing" :?: 8O

I noticed a diff in its performance and it seemed to breathe better since then as well.stock mufflers suck, period.when i had stock muffler mine was so quiet i was re-cranking it at every intersection for the 1st week i had it cause i thought the dam thing had died on me ....LOL  So after i bought a NEW STARTER i got a glass-pack, smartest move i ever made (besides the engine) hope this helps  :D

The local authorities used to give me grief when I had just a glasspack on my 77. It set off car alarms with remarkable ease. I replaced it with a turbo muffler and they seemed to leave me alone. Glasspacks do have a fairly loud/sharp rap to them. The cheap turbo muffler I replaced it with sounded similar, just smoother. Less sharp and harsh edges. When I moved over to a 76, it had a cleaned out glasspack followed by a turbo muffler with an dual Ansa tip on the end or the pipe. That made for a nice mellow sound with no harsh noise and flow seemed to still be pretty good. A glasspack alone will not give you that wizzing weedwacker noise you hear out the fart cannon of a ricer, but it isn't as quiet as some might like.

Original stock luv pipe is less than 2 inch. It looks more like water pipe than exhaust. 2 inch should be ok, 2 1/2 would be as big as I would go. If I was redoing my exhaust today I'd probably go for 2 1/4, with something in a Maganflow muffler or maybe a Flowmaster 60 series. I've heard an Isuzu motor through a Magnaflow, and I've heard a lot of good things about the flowmaster 60s.

the stock pipe on my toyota was 1 3/4 and i put 2 1/2 onto it with a flowmaster series 40 and it added probably 20 more ponies, plus it sounds  bitchen  . it sounded like a really pissed off bear, a grizzley bear. but then i wrecked the truck.stupid ditch got in my way.

Well, good news is i got er on. Bad news is all he had was an 18", and i didn't feel like ordering a smaller one, so it's really not very loud. Decent tone (for a $25 part), and i notice a tinge more throttle response. Feels like she's breathing a lot deeper now. Thanks for the help, guys! Next move, header...

It's basically a muffler with fiberglass internals. I guess you could say it's kind of like a resonator. Makes yer truck a little louder.

its a muffler with like a pipe inside with little groves to give it a loud performance sound!!! it sounds way better when those little groves burn off.

Depends on the application. Some old glasspacks give you a VERY rice sound. Definitely not cool. Mine could use a LITTLE more snap, but if it gets real bad, i'll just scrap it and maybe go with a turbo muffler.
