I ordered a clutch for my 80 4x4 and i got an 8.5" clutch. I had a flywheel laying around that has the bolt patern for my spare 1.8L but that flywheel is only set up for an 8" clutch. So my question is this, is the clutch for the 4x4s an 8.5" diameter? Thanks.

From what I've sussed out, 1980 and later 4x4s had the 8.5", 2WDs have the 7 7/8". Somewhere about 82-83 everything Isuzu truck went to the 8.5" disc up to 87/88 when the 9.5" came in for the 2.6L motor. 1979 4x4s came with the 7 7/8" disc same as 2WDs. I guess they figured out the 4x4s needed a bigger clutch after the first year came through.

I guess this falls under the possible upgrades category for 76 and newer trucks. I had thought about it at one time, but didn't bother to pursue it since clutch swaps are such a huge task. Rockauto lists the same plate/disc set and bearing part numbers all the way back to 72 trucks on the 2WDs, but I don't know if you can interchange the newer flywheel set up for the larger disc onto the older style motor. In theory its possible, but you don't see many people really building power 1.8L motors with the 72-75s anyway. There is also a chance one might find a way to fit the 9.5" setup used on 2.6L motors to a LUV 1.8L, but I think there are enough differences to make that a tough switch.

When you do get the two of them side by side, compare the ring gear diameters. If the flywheel isn't bigger around (meaning different ring gear size and therefore starter spacing) There shouldn't be any issues with swapping them around. That is the only "gotcha" I can think of. Come to think of it, I have a 1980 motor sitting in the back of a truck, and a 1976 motor sitting in the back of another truck that I could compare.
