 Post subject: backfire??????????
PostPosted: Mon Nov 08, 2004 7:18 am
i just got my little 79 4x4 and i am haveing a couple of problems.
it runs decent at idle, and revs up nicely, but under load it backfires and has absolutely no power- on a flat road or down hill its ok but uphill sucks
it has new wires plugs cap rotor.
i have messed with the timing and have eliminated most of the backfire for most driving, but if i give it too much throttle it will start to backfire, i let off and it goes away.

now for what really looks like bad news to me
the distributor is 180 degrees off :( . i have swapped the wires around on the distributor so the #1 fires on #1. could this still make it backfire?

also today i am going to replace the fuel filter
is there anything else i should look at?
i know the carb is ok- but could it still be the culpritt, its stock
or is it becuase the distributor is 180 off?
help
this is my first import, and if it keeps going like it is- it will be my last, lol

You definitely need to get the dist in the right position. that should get rid of your backfiring problem.

I don't know if I agree with the age thing, but if Dr. Luv is serious about thinkin mufflers are the answer to the prob. and he is trying to help, then thats fine. If it was ment to be sarcastic or a joke then I could see a prob. He owns a luv, and I thought thats what this site was for! My .02

I was trying to help thanks guys. My dad had a costermer that the inside of the cat got blowen back into the muffler and it backfired. just trying to help thanks for being supporyive. god you guys. hey and no i dont think the problem with everything is the muffler. actually i know alot more about cars than most kids in their teens. so w/e age has nothing to do with it
