Okay people I'm new here and have a little problem. On my way to work this morning my 1980 Luv's rear wheels locked up at 60 miles an hour.(heck of a way to wake up!) When I got it towed home the wheels were moving again. haven't looked at it yet but anybody have any ideas? thanks in advance. bish

That sounds exciting. I would have to guess it is something in the rear differential, and its probably not going to be exactly fixable. You could drain the diff fluid and see if any chunks of anything important come out. If it failed that bad it seems like you should be able to see something at least. (Flakes of metal or even larger chunks)

The only other possibility is something in the brakes, but I wouldn't think they would do anything without you stepping on the pedal. So if it happened right when you hit the brake you might need investigate that angle a little further.

That does get the ole ticker pumpin doesn't it.

I had something similar happen years ago (1989) with my first one, but wasn't going 60. Was doin about 30-35 and it was my transmission that froze up. Being young dumb and full of ..... well you get the idea, I had no idea that MT had oil in it that needed to be checked, so mine was pretty much bone dry when it happened.

I would agree with 800 on the rear diff, it's got to be something related to one of the three, brakes, trans, or diff.

Good luck and thankfully nothing bad happened.

Chad

that happened to my cousin, the reason why i recieved the luv off him in the 1st place lol. he didnt think he had to put oil in the engine resulting in the con rod blowing apart pushing the piston through the head, cracking the block and jaming the crank

my front brakes locked up, that was pretty scary, but what i had to do was reduce the spacing between the calipers/disc and flush the brake system

I almost always have problems with the rear brakes locking before the fronts. My last truck had a habit of locking just one side on the rear, making for a few sorta sideways stops at a sudden red light. Always a good way to attract attention. ;)

Might be time for drums/shoes in the rear there blue, or I wonder if your proportioning valve isn't working quite right. On the other hand, with a car on a dolly it could just be more than those poor luv rear brakes can cope with. I wish there was an easy way to drop in discs back there. Need to get you a turbo Isuzu impulse in your yard and you could upgrade to discs in the rear and get a limited slip in the bargain. :)

Well the problem with my lockup turned out to be something in the transfer case. Haven't had time to pull it apart yet to much else going on right now. When i get to it i'll post again.
