Lright i have an oil leak on my 1.8. Its on the intake side (its slicked whith iol 8O ) and is going through about a quart a week. I was just wondering if any of you guys have had problems like this and if so where did you find the leak. The motor has about 6000mile on a rebuild. Thanks for any help.

check the oil pressure sending unit, sometimes they crack and will dump alot of oil.

I thought that the Oil pressure sending unit was on the left side of the engine? Well anyway I guess its how your looking at the engine lol. I hear ya Mepr I had the same problem and mine was the sending unit that we are talking about. I fortunately had an extra laying around (from my spare engine) It has really cut back on my oil usage. Now I need to get off my butt and start getting ready for a V-8 swap I just noticed about a month ago while I was screaming down I-5 at a whopping 60 miles an hour  That when I get out of the gas I get a nice big plume of smoke! :x So I am rebuiling my other head from my spare just in case I lose it before I get my V-8 stuff going.

Hey guys,
I have suggestion that a guy told me about once(Thank god I haven't had to use it) First you have to clean the motor real good get all the crud and oil off it the cleaner the better, Then take your fan off, Be sure to put the pulley back on so the water pump turns, Take a spin let the engine get warm, then get home and let it idle for a minute shut it down and look for the leak on your clean everywhere but where the oil is coming out engine. and the point of taking the fan off is so it dosen't blow the oil all over from the original source. Sounds unconventional but he swore he never met a leak he couldn't find.
Hope this helps...

Dave

or clean it up, put some dye in it, drive it for awhile, then use a blacklight to find the leak. Worked for me back when i was in school.

My truck dosnt loose much oil its just a constant loss (looses about 1 quart every couple of weeks). I dont mind soo much its better justification for the 350... "but mom i need that engine mine dosnt hold oil... oh and dont worry about power its not THAT much"

I had alittle proublem with my 79 starting to leak oil around the oil filter. There is a company here in Texas that makes a good product that well stop a oil leak.. you just add to your oil. I have buzzed to work now for about 5 months, and NO oil leaks! The company is located in Huntsville Texas and is called Cargo. Hey what about the specks on the oil pan.. all that i could find in haynes sounds extremely high! When i rebuilt my 80 1.8 i didnt respect those tourk specks...NO LEAKS!! Bob the dye is a good way to see where your leaking, kinda cool to if ya doit at night, ya sure can see any leaks.
