 Post subject: Grinding problem
PostPosted: Tue Oct 19, 2004 5:07 pm
Hey everybody!!, Im new here and I have a small problem, Whenever I start my truck, it makes a loud grinding noise. My friend thinks that it is the starter, but it is new. My uncle thinks that its the flywheel. This noise is very annoying and very noticeable. Oh, and I have a 1.8 stock, 79 Chevy Luv 4X4. Its my pride and joy. Any input would be appreciated beyond words

You might need to shim the starter out a bit...

Welcome to the site :D

Thanks, I will try that, what do you think about the flywheel idea? Could it also be a problem?

Welcome! :D

Starter shims.

I've had this issue with my fullsize Chevy starter before. Check the flywheel teeth as mentioned already to make sure it's good, but the noise is caused by the starter pinion not being shimmed properly. When the starter pinion moves out all the way it should be lined up with the flywheel perfectly or as close to perfect as you can.

Its a thin metal shim that goes between the starter and the block to help align the starter to the flywheel. P.S the only stupid question is one not asked :D

Well, I figgured it out. Once again NAPA sold me a shitty part  , the replacement starter that I bought about 3 months ago wasent retracting all the way and it managed to chew up the teeth on my flywheel. Its not that bad though, but I would suggest not to buy your starter from NAPA if you can avoid it.
