The vacuum advance on my distributor is hooked up to the air cleaner for some reason or another. Should it be hooked to the carb, or is it actually supposed to be hooked to the air cleaner?

BTW... the truck is now running, I've driven it all over the place today. Now I need to replace the radiator cap, so it'll quit belching antifreeze out of the overflow hose. For some reason, when the engine heats up, the truck refuses to idle.

It's always something. I think I'll make that my signature.

Hey drummer,
I would hold off on the rad cap, I tried it and it dosn't work and it could also cause some serious damage to you engine. It is designed to work at a certain pressure range(around 13psi I think) The trick is to get an over flow tank in there some how. I'm using a mountain Dew bottle for now.
As for the vacum advance it should be hooked to good vacum such as the carb that could have something to do with it not idleing.
Hope this helps....

Dave

I hooked the vacuum advance back to the carb and it still doesn't like to idle when it warms up. I think I just need to reset my idle. This is the first time this truck has been ran over 5 minutes in 10 years. The license plate says Dec 1993.

The radiator cap was missing the gasket inside of it, and it had a big crack in it also. There was antifreeze going everywhere.. out of the top, the sides, and the overflow. I got the correct replacement for it, and it's much better. :D

Do you have an E.G.R. valve? If so, it might be stuck open. It wont hold an idle if its stuck open. I've had to smack my valve with a big wrench once in a while to free it up.

lol.... tell me about it.

It's too dark and cold to see if there's an EGR valve or not. I'll check it out tomorrow when it gets all the way up to 40 degrees. It was fun driving it home today, running every stop sign in the neighborhood.

I smacked the EGR valve, and then reset my idle. Runs like a champ now. Now all I need is a thermostat.

your vacuum advance should be hooked up to a metered vacuuum port on the carb.
