I'm new and this is my first post. I bought a 79 4x4 that I have been slowly fixing up. The engine has almost 250K miles on it and I'm getting ready to rebuild it. Since I bought the truck I have had the aftermarket Weber 2BBL rebuilt and got a valve job done when I replaced the head gasket. What can I do to add some power during the rebuild? On another post somebody mentioned a new cam, anyone know where I can get one? What about a header? The truck doesn't have any emission controls, they aren't required since it is a 79 and registered in Texas. I luv everything else about the truck. Anyone know what the largest tires I can fit on my Luv without lifting or cutting? I have stock 14" wagon wheels but I'm looking for a set of skinny 15" wheels from a junk yard. Thank you in advance for the info and advice.
Devin

welcome :D

Weber DGEV 32/36 Carburator
Offenhauser Intake Manifold
pacesetter header

get the weber carb and header. the intake is a rare item to find. you could also put a mild cam in there and bore out the engine to .40.
also can switch out the dist. points for electronic.

i used to have a set of 15-8, 275 by 75 rims on mine. all i had to do is lift the rear and crank the torsion bars up. they only rubbed when you hit bumps while turning. thats probably the largest you could get under there without a lift :D

I do not have the weber or the intake yet, but I have done the header, plus I also had the rest of the exhaust redone with 2" pipe and a high flow turbo muffler. Additionally I converted the engine driven fan to 2 electric fans (push in front and pull behind the radiator). This takes some rotational mass off of the motor, plus takes away from some of the drag from the fan. I have also upgraded to the 1981+ electronic ignition, and replaced the coil with a MSD Blaster 2 coil. I am running about 11 or 12 degrees timing using 93 octane gas. I have oversized tires (compared to stock) and the truck has enough power to bury the speedo at 85+.

Thanks for the advice guys, I get back from deployment in a few weeks and when I get back, this rebuild will be my first big project. Since I Just had a valve job done I'll leave the cam alone for the time being. Along with a stock rebuild I'll add a header and new exhaust system (I already took off the cat) My Weber carb is using the originial air cleaner assembly and I'll swap that out for a more free flowing one. I bought my truck from the originial owner who added a CD ignition system. The system still works great and uses the points only as a microswitch to trigger the capacitance discharge system, there is no pitting or wear on the points.
I'll post some pictures of the truck when I get back.

For the cam, here you go. Give them a call. They're good people...

The ones I use are both from Jegs. Puller is PN 134-75014 called a performance european. It is a 16" (yes it fits). The pusher is a 14" PN 400-394 called an S-Blade. It fits a little tight in the front, especially with A/C. I had to bend my valence down a bit for it to fit, but you cant see it.
