Hey guys... I need to clean my fuel tank out pretty badly. The line where the fuel pump hooks up to is plugged up pretty bad. I've tried to blow it out, but I'd rather get the tank cleaned so I dont run into the same problem again down the road.

Anyways, I've got the tank dropped and there doesn't look like any good way to open it up. What have you guys done? I may just go buy a freakin fuel cell.

And where in the hell do all these freakin hoses hook up to??? I mean... there's like 7 or 8 of them, and I can only figure 3 of them out. How many do I need and can I plug any of them off??

lol... I remember my grandfather telling me a story about his old mechanic who cut a tank open, cleaned it out, and then.....

Drum roll.......

Welded it back together. 8O

Ever see a 13 gallon torpedo? It shot clear through the roof and landed a few hundred yards away.

check with your local radiator shops. there are quite a few that will rod out your gas tank just like a radiator. most places just don't advertise it, not to high of a demand for it i guess. thats who i had done mine in the past.

Yep, I had a tank cleaned out that I was going to have chromed at the shop that made my radiator. It cost about $25 if I remember right.

alrighty then.. I'll do that.

Didn't JC Whitney sell plastic replacement fuel tanks at one time? I don't see them in the catalog in front of me.

The eastwood company also sells a kit to clean-etch-and seal a tank for about $40.

They are on the net...not sure of the actual address tho.

I know of one guy that would weld up gas tanks while they were still in the vehicle.
he would tell the person to fill it as full as they could get it before it was to be welded.
I guess if the tank is full it doesn't have any oxygen to burn.
anyway the guy still does it.......

That dude has guts....

Anyways... I broke down and took the tank to Four Seasons radiator in beautiful Memphis today. $55 and they said they'd make it like brand new. There are like a whopping 2 radiator shops within 40 miles of me, so I figured that was the best deal I was going to find.... And I got to look at a pretty receptionist while I was there.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME but I know a guy who has moved the spoout loacation on gas tanks before when building street rods.He cranks a vehicle up and runs a hose from the exhaust of the vehicle that is running into the tank.Lets it run for a while and does the needed work on the tank. This removes any oxygen but I still don't want to try it.I have also heard of a chemical you can pour into the tank that will remove the oxygen but I am not going to try that either.I would not recommend anything other than letting a pro do it!!!!!!!!

Buy one gallon of carburetor cleaner the type that you soak cabruretor parts in. Place it in the gas tank and ever so often roll the tank so the cleaner is over an uncleaned section of the tank. Flush out with gasoline or use a garden hose. Set in sun or heated area and let it dry out.

The new alcohol added to gas will detorate standard gas hose especially hose on older vehicles. Your tank may be ok and just the gas lines swelled and rotted. Replace with fuel injection hose to pervent futher problems.

Hey Tilted...

Thanks for recommending the radiator shop to me. I had no idea they did that kind of stuff. My two brain cells rubbing together couldn't generate enough sense to figure that out on my own. :drinking:

No Problem!! Always glad to share my knowledge!! I can't remember who told me about it back when I was having the same problem! The only thing that makes me mad about it is, I crawled under a LUV in a junkyard to get the tank out, took it and had it hot tanked to be chromed and then NO ONE in the country would chrome it for me!!! I have seen many chromed tanks before. I asked every owner where they had it done and when I called the places they had it done they all said "Nope, we don't do that anymore, to hard to do. I called every place in the country I could find. I had one place that said they would do it and when I took it down there, they changed their mind. 0X Needless to say, I took the tank to a scrap yard about 8 years ago. :(
