since i got my 76 luv with the stock 4 banger (but its been rebuilt 21k miles ago) in it ive been having alot of problems with it and i would like to find the easiest solutions at cheapest price. so here it goes
1. when im going i get to about 35 mph and it just starts cutting out big time it will just lose all power but engine wont turn off. :(
2.then i just get to a stop sign and half the time it dies :(
3.the timing is off cause i can here it clinking when driving
4. if i press the gas down to fast the engine will just (over rev RIGHT WORD??) and wont pick up speed just makes the engine really loud and makes me think it will explode if i dont let up, it wont squel tires unless in puffey dirt(and then it wont go anywhere)

is there anything i could do that is reletivly cheap to the 4 banger to give it more horse power?? and would i get more mpg if i put a 6 cyl in it and how much would it cost thanks for any suggestions

Chris

I would say fix the timing issue and see if gets better. Then ask the question again with the new situation. If something is known to be wrong, fix it. A header, cam, and Offenhauser intake were once available for this engine and can occassionally be found floating around. A Weber carb, Jacobs ignition, and good exhaust will be a help, but the full potential will not be had until you fix that timing problem and add the header and intake. Anyway, I hope this helps you...

Edit: Also, see here. Tim (800xl) did an excellent write up.

If it is a Manual Transmission try checking the clutch... It sounds like it might be slipping by the way you said you hit the gas and it just revs really high... My clutch was slipping on my motorcycle and it did the same thing. I don't think it would cause those other problems but it might...

automatics still have clutch problems. try checking the seals on the transmission, our mercedes 450 slc had old seals, and it had really bad acceleration. does the car accelerate ok after the car has been driven around and warmed up for a while?

It could have more than one problem causing all your grief. Was the engine already rebuilt when you got it? If so, I would investigate if the timing chain was installed properly. If the carb is a Hitachi, then that could be a part of your problems.

well i just got back from auto an hour late for my next class. but some of the problems we found have been fixed. like the dwell was at 66 degrees instead of between 49-55 now it is 53 degrees. the timing was off bad he said in a few days more it wouldnt have started. he drove it around the block and said it also had what he thought there was a feul pump broblem or the ehuat was bad or something so he said on monday we would check out the other problems well gtg

I'd do a full tune up:Spark plugs, Plug Wires, Points & Conensor and distributor cap. (Unless you know its been done not that long ago) Then do timing and dwell.

The dwell changing is a constant thing with points. The phenolic block that rides on the lobes of the distributor shaft should've been designed with an oil wick to keep the shaft lobes lubricated. Also, becuz of the timing chain tensioner, there isn't an equal number of links on each side of the installed chain.

well i my auto teacher finnaly looked at it again and we hooked up a fuel pressure gage or something and it had no fuel pressure, lol the fuel filter under the hood was almost empty, so we deided to unhook the bottom one to see if the pump was working, and it wasnt working very well, the funny thing is it ran almost 10 minutes on nothin since the fuel line was off lol. my truck had been running on basicly fumes this whole time and would go to 50 mph on fumes, lol i was wondering why ive only had to fill up 2 times this month, well i got to get a fuel pump now and someone that is more machanicly inclined than i am, (my area is more on computers but soon i will know all about my luv and what the parts do.) and then i got to fix my idle problem it wont stay in one place it will be way to high somedays and way to low most of the time. well i got to go.

Check inside the gas tank for rust. That'll clog up a fuel system and shut it down.

You said unhooked the bottom one to check the pump. The filter shoud be between the pump and the tank. You should probably replace the filter then check the pump. In any case it'll probably be a good idea to replace it anyway.
Could be the source of your idle problem too. If it does run on "fumes" sometimes and other times gets more fuel. just a thought.
