So, I just baught a 76 luv for 300. Ran Ok, decent condition, don't have time to play, so i was going to drop it off at a friends house to get a few things fixed. Temp gauge is broke , and on the way there the presure builds up to the point of blowing the radiator stem and cap right off the friggin radiator! So I use a rag as a replacement radiator cap, and lots of coolant/water. Real soon after I get going, she starts pouring white smoke out of the pipe. I figure the asshole who sold it to me had little/no radiator fluid and mostly water in it, to cover that up (or maybe I'm just bitter). ANyway, now I have a reason to quickly get a 305 0r 350. If anyone has any ideas, lemme know, please.

:x

Sounds like a head gasket. If the truck ran ok, then I would fix the head gasket and drive it till you are ready to do the swap.

It's really not hard to change the head gasket on these things. just undo the carb, the exhaust from the manifold, take the rocker cover off, undo the head bolts and lift it off. Couple hours tops.

Just make sure not to drop either of the timing cover bolts into the oil pan, or you'll have to pull the motor and might as well just replace every gasket on the truck. I did, and it sucked big time.

Yeah, the headgasket isn't too bad to swap, but my engine has an aluminum head, and I know the engine got REALLY friggin hot, so I know the head will need some wicked machineing. Also, my oil light came on, which is a cam bearing probelm, isn't it? It's a high mileage (over 100000 mi) engine, and I don't know if it would be worth the work, unless you all have a fair priced one handy??? I'll ask lilblue too. Thanks guys!
