yaaaaaa.... i started the rebuild on the utility truck and i'm almost done.

how do i set the damn cam? my book shows the 75 and earlier marks and not mine. this is a 79 motor.

i've heard a few ppl here get there's 180 off and i'm not down for that. i think my cam would cause a bad crash so i need to do it right the first time.

Put #1 piston to TDC. Install the timing chain by aligning the mark plate of the chain with the mark on the crankshaft srocket. (Mark plates to the front.) On the cam sprocket, the triangle mark aligns with the other mark plate with the slack or most links in the chain guide.

i guess my kit was cheap cause i didn't get a chain w/bright liknks on it.
but if you're in my boat here's the skinny.....for a 1980 g180

set the crank to tdc#1(to make sure...check the dist. rotor),the alignment pin(disregard the marks on the outer edge of the sprocket) in the cam points straight down.

always turn the motor over by hand (wrench)before you try to start it.
