I have an '80 LUV, totally stock mechanically (1.8L, 4spd, 2wd). Since I have owned it, the "heat" light has been on. If I remove the air cleaner it usually goes off, but not always. Any ideas from you fellas?

How hot does the gauge say you're running at when the heat light goes on? I know it doesn't show numbers, but is the needle far outside of the normal mark? If the gauge is working and it shows that you're not running too hot then I would think that your temp sender might be sticking closed. I'm not so sure why removing the air cleaner would affect that though. Since you say it sometimes helps I'm thinking it might not be related.

Beetle,
It's my understanding this light has something to do with the catalytic convertor. I have tried the usual things, checking connections, unplugging the wire, read wires etc. But somewhere I am not finding what interconnects to this to allow the power to get to the light or is shorted and allowing the power. As for engine temp, it is just fine. Doesn't overheat or even get close to it.

hey bob... i don't know if this helps but the heat light and buzzer(whiner)in my rig goes off for a few seconds right about when my choke opens up. right above the gas pedal there's two little boxes..one's the speed sensor and the other is a temp controled device for the smog systems.the temp device controls the gauges, choke, and smog stuff.there's probably a short somewhere inside the device or it's wiring(think big feet  knocking wires around).....i was having problems with my speed sensor and the trigger was any vibration around the middle of the firewall.

hate to admit it but, wiring is the main shortcoming in these luvable litttle trucks.

Thanks to all for the help. Sounds like I might be on track for a fix on this annoying problem.
