I have recently got a 79 luv 4x4 that doesnt run. I feel that the timing is off really bad. I see a timing mark, dot thing, whatever on the cam gear, what and how do I aligh this so it is right? I also see that the rocker arm gaps are all messed up, and help on what to gap them at?

have a look at the timming chain, is there any bright links on it, on mine there are 2, one goes over that dot on the cam gear and the other goes to the very bottom on the crank gear. if that all lines up the timing should be right. as for the gap clearance for the rocker arms, im not sure off by heart, ill have a look when i get home. hope this helps

Setting the clearance on the rocker arms was a breeze! I pulled the coil wirre, and set the clearance for the intake at .006", and the exhaust at .010". Make it tight, not sloppy. I had to go back after I ran it around the block, and reset almost every one. Warning! Don't even attempt this with the engine running!!! The timing chain with give you an oil bath! Words of experience (unfortunately). I concur with the comments about the timing chain marks ( as shown in the Haynes manual). If your off a tooth, I hope there are no other surprises!

Those measurements for the rocker gaps are cold, don't do it on a warm engine as things will be off. That is the gap between the rocker and the valve too, not cam/rocker. You turn the motor over to where it is at TDC, then you can get half the valves. Turn it over halfway again and you can get the other half. Basically you want the cam lobe of the valve you are adjusting to be no where near touching the rocker arm for that valve.

For the timing, I think you should get the bright link on the chain lined up with the mark on the gear at TDC. If not, turn it another turn of the crank(1/2 turn of the cam) and see where it comes up. Problem is, you can't see the mark on the crank gear to make sure it is right too. I never felt like I could be certain about the valve timing without tearing the timing cover off, which requires the oil pan come off, which requires (in a 4x4 at least) the motor come at least part way out. I've got a truck in basically the same state as you right now that isn't running yet for that very reason. The most it does is shoot flames out the carb.

You might just be having trouble getting it to run because the valves are adjusted way off. Too tight and you get no/low compression, popping back through the carb, all sorts of odd stuff. Too loose and it will not get enough fuel/air or burn the exhaust valves.
