 Post subject: 5th gear

apparently Ben had a 5th gear put in his stock tranny??? Does anybody know how to do this? NOBODY has a fifth gear in their truck bsides the diesel guys!!?!?!?

Sure would like to know how to do that. That would bump your highway mileage up a bit. I just can't envision how to do it, but I'm not a mechanical engineer.

i ran across a post somewhere on the board where Ben said he had a replacement tranny put in and while they were doing it he had them put in a fifth gear. I may be misunderstanding but i dont know how. I wish someone would speak up...someones gotta know how to do it. I'll try to dig up the post again and put a link on here to it...

could he be talking about those aftermarket overdrives avail from places like Gear Vendors? The mount tot he output shaft on the tranny and the drive shaft hooks from it to the rear diff?

but normally they are crazy expensive?!

Now that make's sense. 50 years ago as a youngun, I had a 54 Ford that had an overdrive that was in the tail piece of the tranny. It was a solar gear with 3 planetary gears that was actuated by a centrifugal switch when a certain speed was reached. Worked great, but I haven't seen any such setups since.
