Is it best to use the stock timing setting or will advancing the timing give you more power?? The stock setting in my 80 4x4 is 6 degrees btdc and I have run it that way but always hear that advancing the timing can help with the power. Let me know what you all have experienced. Thanks

i have my timing set to 10btdc for acceleration, but when you do that you need to run better fuel. i run 91 octane for mileage and i have higher compression from having my head surfaced three times now, so i am taking advantage of the .5 to 1% improvement in power that goes with the timing.

keeping your ignititon and carb tuned well really make the most difference in these motors. the weber carb and a set of headers seem popular to a lot of people on this site but having your motor in top shape really is the way to go if you plan on keeping your truck stock

I'd leave the points alone don't know much about them.

you know... if you really want to get that much out of the ignition find an 81 and take the distributer, coil and don't forget the ignitor(or control module) and do a swap, that will get more results than changing the timing and it will be a lot more forgiving at high rpm's. points tend to bounce on the lobe above 5000rpm and that is a major loss of top end power.
