i just bought a new carb and i need a tip on a good starting point for setting it up. such as the idle mixture. where is a good starting place to set the mixture? and i know the idle is kinda "to each their own" but my truck is running VERY rich and no matter where i set the idle miture, it doesnt seem to help. do i need to just let it "run in" and get all the pickling oil out and then try to set it or what? btw it is a direct replacement hitatchi carb with all the emissions stuff on it but it is not a california truck. thanks

If it were me I would take off the stock carb and all the emision pumps etc., and put on a web 38 dges. Very similar to the 32/36 progressive but has two 38mm venturies that open both at the same time. Way better.

Well anyone that deals in weber carb stuff should not have a problem getting one If you can't get one give me a call at my work 1 888 285 2841
Once again my name is Dave and I'll make shure you get treated right.
Other than that you get carb, manifold adapter, and air cleaner assyble, plus usually linkage adapter.

But take a look here is a link for tuning it.
http://www.redlineweber.com/html/Tech/3 ... unning.htm
And here is a link that shows all carbs that weber makes for luv, but the 38 dges is the bomb

Back to the original question... I too just purchased a rebuilt carb for my 77 for those of us who can't go and buy a new webber. Are there any suggestions on how to tune it/set it up? I can't seem to get it all to work out just right. If anyone has a site or any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

HI Paradox .first i set the timing ,make sure its at low idle {warmed up}then set the idle speed ,then turn the idle screw in till the idle slowes down {full lean} then turn it out till you find the highest idle then your done,P.S.to help pass smog after you find full lean only turn the scerw out1/4 to 1/2 it will run shitty but it should pass smog easer P.S.for max power set the timing by advanceing it till it pings on a full throttle road test then back it off 2or 3deg hope this helps

Be very careful about using the ping whay to set timing. Your engine can have inaudible ping, which will still severly damage your engine. Over a period of time you WILL end up with a hole in your piston or broken ring lands on the pistons. It is safer to follow the factory settings unless you have made other changes in the engine, cam specs, which affect cylinder pressures.

according to the book, timing should be set at 6 degrees btdc @ 850-950 rpm. dwell angle should be 47-57 degrees with engine stabilized at idle. point gap should be 0.016-0.020 inches. hope this helps. (wait a minute, i started this thread and i am helpin others. cool :D )

watch glass window in float chamber and lower the float level. the float level on this carb controls the general mixture. then adjust idel as soneone else has perscribed in this thread.

-While we're talking carb swaps... Early eighties Plymouth Horizons and Dodge Omnis had a really nice Holley progressive 2bbl. You have to make up an adapter, and work the linkage a little to get it to work, but they seem to be real easy to come up with, and they work great on the 1.8. I've been running one for the past two or three years, and it really works nice. A bonus- it's a Holley, so it takes regular Holley jets, which you can get anywhere.
