When my truck is warm and driving down the road, anywhere from 30 mph and up, I get a really loud tapping sound from the engine. It only does it when I'm cruising, if I speed up or slow down, for the most part it goes away. I've adjusted my rocker arms according to my HAYNES manual twice now and removed my manual fuel pump, (G200 head and block). I just can't get it to go away, I'm afraid to take the truck over 50 mph cause it gets so loud it actually scares me.

Check your timing chain for a loose or broken link. If it is getting that bad, it may be the chain is starting to think about going south.

Last time my LUV made that noise was also the last time I drove it with the 1.8L in there. The timing chain snapped and screwed many valves. You better check/replace your chain, and the gears before you end up like me....with a SBC in your LUV....

I inspected my chain when I re-threaded my spark plug holes last week and everything thing seemed to be on the up and up. What exactly is piston slack? I imagine it means pulling the motor and oil pan, but what is it? Is it going to irritate me forever, or blow my motor at anytime? Thanks so much.

piston slack occurs when there is wear in the cylinder, giving the pisont more room to move, ie slack, to fix the prob, yes it does require you to pull the engine and you basically need to rebuild it, in my opinion, get a new/reco engine

piston slap doesn't hurt anything. if that is what the noise is i wouldn't worry about it. luvs are terrible about noisy valves sine the rocker arm is directly on the cam, you can't tighten them down enough to take up all the slack. they will always clatter. i've just learned to deal with it. if they are adjusted right it will quieten it down a little. if it bothers you get a louder exhaust and you won't be able to hear it. i can only hear mine idleing.

I guess it's gonna be a degenerative problem, I went off-roading last weekend and now when I start the truck up in the morning it sounds great, but every 20 seconds or so it knocks for about 5 seconds, then stops, then runs great for about 20 seconds and rattles for 5 seconds and so on. Are the valve clearances different for the G200 opposed to the G180? Cause I've been adjusting them according to the specs on the hood, but I didn't know at the time it was a different engine. Thanks.

You know, If I wern't so silly, I would almost say that that sounds like it is timing over anything else.

Going in and out like that.

is it a tapping noise or a knock cause there is a big difference. the valve clearances should be the same for the g200 as the g180. check your timing, it could be way too fast and causeing the motor to spark knock.
