my 79 4x4 luv is super slow. it only goes 60-65 and sounds like it is going to blow up because it is reving so high! is this normal or does anyone else's stock luv this slow? it has a new long block motor with less then 2,000 miles is it because its not all the way broke in yet or what? any comments would help me. or if anyone knows how to get it a little faster but and inexpensive way!!! any help would be great!!!!

My 80 LUV sounds the same way. They're only 4 speeds and I've had mine up to 80mph and it's still plugging along just fine.

I'd have to agree w/ every one else..... the only way to get a smoother run out of the motor would be to have the crank balanced, but if your gonna spend the money why not get a different motor? you might want to check this out if your really unsatisfied w/ the motor : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 2469357367

The 4X4's are geared high, so it will probably turn over alot of RPM's to get it up to the 60 or so MPH that you need it to go. So you may want to make sure there's some click 50 in her!

My truck runs on 225/70/R14 tires, and it will still bury the needle in the tach at 85+mph (approx 5250 RPM). Upgrades on my truck include:

1. Holley Red 7psi fuel pump (probably doesnt do much for performance, but its cheaper than a stock pump, more psi, and is rebuildable) $50 rebuilt
2. MSD Blaster 2 coil (this cleaned up my spark quite a bit) $30
3. Pacesetter Hedders, paid about $125 on ebay
4. 2" exhaust and high flow turbo muffler (no cat) $225
5. Turned the air filter lid upside down (free)
6. Electric fan conversion (push and pull fans) $96
7. Electronic ignition from '81+ trucks (came with the motor I bought for the truck).
8. Since I run 93 octane I have the timing at 12 degrees (instead of 6 degrees stock). This helps quite a bit with acceleration.

If I were to recommend one thing that I thought made the biggest difference, it would be the hedders, then the fan conversion. I cannot speak much on the timing by itself. 12 degrees works good for me probably because of my entire setup and the gas I choose to run in the truck.

Had to get up the next morning and fire it up just to double check that it still ran. Damn P.O.S 4 cyl.
