Rebuilt brakes and clutch had my Luv running really good, idled beautiful had good pick up and seamed to be getting good gas mileage. This weekend I tanked up on Friday and by Sunday morning was down to 1/4 tank of gas, having only driven approximately 36 miles. I could hardly keep it running and had to rev it up all the time. Stalls and dies at idle and seems to be flooding. Can anybody help me with this problem?

Is the tail pipe back and sooty? If so, check the float and needle valve operation. If the float has a leak and sinks, you'll get flooding. The same if the needle valve won't close off the fuel flow through the seat cause of too much wear.

yep, sounds like its flooding out, which explains where your gas is going. could have gotten some trash under the needle.

WOW! Just noticed I'm now a Senior Member. Since I'm already a Senior Citizen, can I change my moniker to SENIOR SENIOR?

Is there anyway to check the float and needle valve or clean it up without removing the carb? Or will I have to rebuild it?

Presuming you have a Hitachi carb, pull the side sight glass plate off to access the float chamber. For the needle valve and seat, take the fuel line off the top of the carb and remove the brass fittings beneath them, which are the needle valve and seat assembly. Shake the float, if it's the hollow, to see if fuel is inside. Drop the float in a can of gas to see if it floats if its the solid kind. Inspect the seat and needle valve assembly for wear or foreign objects. If they're suspect, replace them. Don't be surprised if this doesn't help. The Hitachi carb is a shitty carb.

I had the same problem. It gets shitty gas mileage in the city, but great on the highway because of the high RPMs. My float was sticking.

would remove the carb.....cause that last thing you need is to drop a screw or spring down the intake and have to remove that aswell and thats only if you get lucky it could make it in to the head....and that would suck a fat one!

That's why you stuff a rag in in each intake. You don't have to pull the carb to check the float and needle valve on a Hitachi, cuz you're accessing from the side not the top.
