well i was drivin around on deliveries tonight and my truck starts to make a sound when im accelerating. So i think about it for a bit and it seems to resemble the sound you get when you turn on your garbage disposal...not good...just not as loud as that, well at least not from inside the cab. It only makes the noise when accelerating. I can sit and rev the engine into high rpms and no such noise just healthy engine sounds...i can sit with the break on and put a bit of a load on the engine by letting out the clutch some and still the sound isnt there but when i start to accelerate it makes noise....tranny maybe? Any ideas?

check the pipe that comes out of the back of the exsaust manifold. Mine blew out and just before it did it made a sound kinda like your describing.

U-joints could be a possibility, but all U-joints i have experienced made a "clicking" sound before a "garbage disposal growl" Just go under your truck and see if you can twist the drive shaft either way. If theres visual movement, then i would start with replacing the U-joint(s) and go from there

a tink is a u joint, could be making the disposal noise. if not, maybe tranny  its not a throwout bearing it would only make noise when your foot is on the clutch.

I hope the U-joint thing is right, but I have another suggestion that might not be so straigtforward...

I was driving to school one day and noticed that when I would let go of the gas I would hear a rough whine coming from underneath. When I got back on the gas it would kind of clunk once but the whine went away. To make a long story short, it ended up being my rearend. I don't know much about rears, so I had a guy do it for me. He said that the pinion had come loose and a couple bearings were worn, so the pinion was kind of moving around when it was "disengaged" (i.e. when I let off the gas) but then would re-engage when I hit the gas so it didn't make that noise.

According to him, that can happen in the opposite too (noise on gas, but not when you're off of it). If you're going to be under there checking your U-joints anyway, give the driveshaft a couple of good tugs. If you can move it around, especially from side to side, you may have some rear end issues that need to be addressed. Bad U-joints will usually cause rough driving whether or not you're on the gas since they're always turning, so I don't think thats what it is, but thats just my 2 cents.

took off the driveshaft today...what a mess. The rear of the rear u joint not so bad...the front rear u joint another story. Most all the pin bearing things were completely missing because casing has cracked and they fell out...so now that piece that is 1/2 the u joint which slides into the rear of the tranny is cracking apart and breaking...i think this has happened partially because of the play in the worn out parts of the rest of the drivetrain and partially because the ujoints should have been redone LONG AGO...as well as greased LONG AGO...so, that said...anybody have an extra one of these lil things layin around? Mine seems to be pretty busted up and I think when i put it back together im going to end up just having to tear it back apart and put a new/used piece on it...

u say the u joint is all busted up and cracked or the housing? the u joint comes out of that housing with the caps.
