well after some checking i've decide the rattle in the 80 luv is the rod bearings. it only rattles at higher rpms. but when i changed the oil, when i started it up i could hear it rattleing till the oil pressure came up. i think the motor just has alot of wear and all the rod bearings are just a little loose. it has been making this noise for about a year, which really makes a statement about the toughness of these engines. so i'm gonna buy the 85 isuzu pup beater truck from my friend and pull out the 1.9 and swap it into the luv to replace the 1.8. i ran a compression test on the 1.9 and it had between 165-170 psi. on all cylinders. my book says it had 170 new. and this motor has over 100,000 miles(odometer doesn't work but is stopped at just over 100,000). and has been ran hard. theres been about 10 times i thought we were gonna blow it up, but it still runs great and has compression like it had new.

yes Isuzu makes great engines. Unlike the other major Japanies manuafacturers they started out make motors and industrial equipment. (Suzuiki and honda started as bike companies and Nissan started as a textile company. Not shure about Toyota). That and Isuzu has been making diesels for 97 years 8O . That gives them a little experience on making motors 8)

The oil pump on the 1.8L (and the 1.9) makes quite a racket when it is dry right after an oil drain. If the pump is fairly worn in, it will make a bit of noise even under normal circumstances.

toyota started out making textile equipment(looms etc), as "toyoda". that segment is still known as that, whereas the auto segment is toyota

i think the 1.9 in early s10s is the same as the p'up motor. might make it easier to find :)
