 Post subject: better speaker location?
PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2004 2:45 am
I am lookin around the truck trying to figure out how to mount speakers....i look in the holes in the doors which someone actually made bigger and it appears max mounting depth before hitting the window when it is down is about 2 inches...thats not much with aftermarket speakers today! So i was thinkin about those kick panels...a lot of other cars have speakers in the panels in front of the door. Anybody ever done that to their luv? Or anybody know whats back there if you cut a hole? Is it sealed off? Also, if someones done it, what did you cut the whole with, and if you didnt what do you guys think you could use to cut a hole down there in that kind of position. Iniatially i thot sawzaw...but thats so hard to control...let me know wut you all think! Thx in advance for the advice/help!

I made custom kick panels years ago with 5 1/4" mids and tweets. There are panels that just come out (for access to the door hinges) I think I trimmed a little bit out, but can't remember. here is a pic so you can see how they are mounted.

I mounted 6X9's in those cubby holes that are behind the seat under the louvers. It requires a custom panel, and i would suggest bracing it and also sealing the edges of the panel to the speaker and the truck with silicone or foam, as the 6X9's will tend to vibrate with the mids and lows if you do not.

I stuffed boxes behind the seats. Turned those little cubby holes into storage for wd-40 and things like that. The '73 to '87 chevy trucks used a 4 x 10 in cubby holes like those. I don't think the mounts would be tall enough, but it is a good idea of a place to put speakers.
