heres another stumper for you all, my truck wouldnt start :!: , so i replaced the distributor cap, rotor, and all 5 cords coming out of the d-cap, i also replaced the coil, the only thing left is the igniter, ive never even heard of an igniter :?: , neither have most of the parts places around here that i talked to. I was quoted 7.99 :) last night after my truck got starnded in the middle of nowhere :( , i went in today and they said it was gonna be 398.99 :( , i was pissed :x , the guy there took it apart and looked at it, he had no idea what he was looking  for but wanted to look anyways, a few more parts shops down teh road soembody told me it was no good because it had been taken apart  . Its a Nippondenso igniter, part number 131100-2561, 12 volt. I have an '81 Chevy LUV, its got an Isuzu motor, and the igniter is a Toyota product :? , so all the dealerships that I went to told me to go to another one, and none of them can help me :( , if anybody has any ideas as to what I can do that would be great, the junk yards around here don't have a lot of love, or luvs, so im kinda screwed that way, unless i can get the part from another truck, im thinking maybe an Isuzu PUP, but i dont know what year or anything, these luvs are a bitch to work on arent they, and where is the fuel filter located :?: , i bought one, but dont know where to put it on at, anyways, if anybody knows where i can get a new or used iugniter, how i can test my igniter to see if its still any good even, or if you can tell me what could be wrong with my truck, anything would be helpful, thanks

i think i know what your talking about. By igniter do you mean the box that hooks into the distributor? if so its sometimes called a controll module. As far as looking for one in another truck goes, as long as its the same body style yours is and a 1.8L or 2.0L motor it should work. The fuel filter on my 80 luv is right in the driver side rear wheel well on the frame rail. Good Luck man!

That little box is a resistor of some kind. I can't remember what it is called exactly, but it hooks to the coil and the distributor. I have an extra one from a '79 Luv. Also my luv has two fuel filters. One by the fuel tank in the rear, and one up front by the brake master cylinder.

that is a igniter, mine says igniter on the top. there is also a pickup inside the distributer. its what replaces the points in the electronic ignition. have you made sure its not a fuel problem. spray some starting fluid done the throat of the carb and see if it tries to start. have you made sure you have power to the coil. could be a broken power wire. the fuel filter on the 81 is on the passenger side under the bed between the wheel well and the cab. you can see it from the wheel well or under the truck. thats also where the fuel pump is. you should also make sure the fuel pump is working. a junkyard will be your best source for a cheap igniter i was looking at oreily auto parts web site a while back and saw the igniter listed and it was around $300. i don't think it would be worth buying it new. a isuzu pup would be a good source for a new one. you would have to find one that wasn't computer controlled. i know a 86 is computer controlled and does not have the igniter. i saw somewhere an aftermarket ignition to replace the nippondenso. i will look for it and post it up.

I need to test my igniter to be sure its really bad, i dont want to fork out $100 and turn out to have a different problem, that would suck, I dont have a job right now and Im just getting further into debt, which also sucks. I heard I can hook up a voltmeter to the two wires attatched from the igniter to the coil, but i dont know for sure, if thats true, what should the readings be?, also, where can I pick up a chiltons book, I went to the local barnes and noble and they cant even get one, i dont want to use my credit card online if i can help it, anybody know of any stores that'll order it for me, and are there any other books you guys would recomend that could help? thanks

I assume that you have verified that there is no spark when you crank the engine. And that the rotor is turning when the engine turns.

Make sure that there is voltage to the positive side of the coil when the engine is cranking. The negative side of the coil should show some AC voltage while the engine is cranking but this is a little tricky to measure. Any shop should have a scope that they can use to diagnose this.

If the igniter is bad, the aftermarket parts are a good way to go.
If they still sell it or if you can find one the Mallory Unilight that was on My LUV was very reliable.
