 Post subject: help wont run!
PostPosted: Wed Feb 11, 2004 9:05 pm
While driving the luv it all of the sudden just cuts out. I get it home, running a little rough. I shut it off and try to start it, it barely starts, but it backfires and has a little black smoke and wont idle. (carb?) I cant beleive it, 1 year of driving, 0 problems, then right after I list it for sale. :( :( She gets sick. I appreciate any help.

it could be your fuel pump. it could also be your carb, the float coud have a hole int so it fills up with gas and makes it sink, so it just floods out completely. i would buy a rebuild kit. try holding the throttle to the floor, dont pump it, just hold it to the floor and start it. that lets in lots of air, and not as much fuel.

It sounds a lot like the points problems my 76 used to have every so often. Check the points and see if one side has a pit and the other has a buildup on it. Once they get this way, it is really tough to get them gapped correctly even if you file them down, so replacement is about your only option. At least points are pretty cheap and quick compared to carb parts and rebuild.

If the float sinks you should see gas running into the barrels of the carb from the top. There are two pipes right at the top of the carb in the barrels that are overflows for the bowl. Gas should never come out of them unless the float has sunk or the needle valve is stuck. Usually you can smell gas pretty strong when you open the air cleaner if you have an overflow problem like that.

i agree with 800xl, sounds like ignition problems, and its a cheap place to start sometimes these things are hard to diagnose and you replace a couple of things before you find the problem. so, its best to start with the cheapest things.

It could be an ignition problem. Maybe your points are burned up. I had a '63 chevy i-6 do the same thing. I forgot to lube the points.
