I found that LUVs did not come with 5 speeds. After a long search, I got one out of a 79 Izuzu Mark IV car. It fit perfect and I only had to change the input shaft to a 86 Izuzu Pup. Hope this helps some of you that want to stay stock.

Good info. I put a 5-speed in mine out of a diesel but it didn't handle much abuse. I broke it within a year. Maybe it was bad when I got it, or maybe I was real abusive?

But I would think that the route you took would be better and last longer.

I have not been too easy on my LUV. I use it daily for my job, so it gets a workout. I have had my LUV for about 8 years relatively trouble free until last week when I started losing water. No leaks, none in the oil, and when I pulled the head, no blown gasket. I hate to think that the head cracked, but what else could it be?

Hey Bob, I checked the cap and it was fine. Not losing any water outside that I can see, but having to fill radiator every day ( about a gallon maybe less ). Pulled head, 3 cyl light, 1 dark.

The trans I used was out of an 79 Izuzu car MarkIV. Only thing from the PUP was the front input shaft

Hey bcg187, as long as your LUV has the cable operated clutch the trans is a direct bolt in. You will need an input shaft from a PUP, I think I used a 83.
This is indeed a great site, I have stumbled along for many years alone. Now I have company. Thanks for the great site LUVtruck.com.

Hey bcg187, I just noticed you are working on a 4x4, I have only done the swap on a 2x. Not sure about the 4x4 trans . Doesn't it bolt directly to the transfer case? If so we will need more input, anybody else done this?

Im pretty sure you can get a 5-speed out of a longbed I testdrove a longbed it was pretty fast for a 4 cyl, but you really had to rev it up to hit 5th,oh yeah it was also a really big rust bucket. :?
