I am going to sell my truck on ebay for 1000.00, I cant get it to run and I have put way too much money into it to try and get the engine running, I changed the water pump today because it was leaking and over heating, now it doesnt leak but it still overheats. its making me run out of money and I need to get my boat motor running and put a hitch on my nova to tow the boat because I cant get the truck to run :?
As soon as I get it posted on ebay I will put a link on here so you guys can see some pics. I've had this truck for about a year or so and it only ran for the first two months I've had it. I just bought a weber for it, it will idle but really rough. Hopefully I will change my mind by tommorow because I am buzzzed right now. But I am pissed off at her she wont listen

Man, just take a step back, and breathe. Then think about what you are gonna do with the carb. Does it need rebuilt? If yes, then get to it. I hate to see someone get discouraged enough to sell a truck with so much potential. Remember, this website is here for a reason. If you need help, ask. I will pm you my number so I can talk to you first hand about the carb and truck while you are looking at it. Everything will be okie dokie  .

Don't completely loose patience. I still have my 73 in the back yard with a distributor on my kitchen table all tore apart, and I have had it a year!

So don't get discouraged!

I do know that the truck turns over, but needs alota werk.

I have got it to idle but it only idles at about 1200 rpm, when I try to adjust the idle speed screw it runs really rough so I try to turn the distributor a little back and forth and it just idles high or really rough or dies. Does anybody have suggestions on this and also does anybody have any suggestions on why it would overheat. I just put a new water pump on it and thermostat so I dont think it is those. Today I adjusted the valves, pulled the spark plugs and checked for fouling and regapped and put them back in there was no fouling, I tightened the intake manifold a little more and torqued the head down again, (because I got a new torque wrench so I wanted to make sure they were torqued right). I tightened the egr valve tighter. What were to happen if the condensor went out what are the symptoms for a bad condensor. Its a new condensor and points I have on it but want to make sure they are working still because I just put a new ballast resistor on it also , so any suggestions let me know PLEASE. Shane

with the overheating problem, drain all the water out, and flush the whole system right out, something could be blocking the water jackets in the block, head or manifold, there could also be an airlock in the system which flushing the system should fix. when you refill it put some radiator coolent in with it, hope this helps

just flush it with water, i dont think there is a plug in the block, but if you flush it the water should circulate anyway

HUMM! I would think. .......Be carefull what you do with a stock engine. My personal experience with these engines says,,,, it has to have the correct air-flow to the carb. Vacumes are important.......but your ecr valve plays an important part. It's the part that you cant see under-neith your intake manafold. Your catalatic converter could play a major role in your trouble.(if It has one......cut it off).......oooopppss....shouldn't have noted that! Air to fuel intake sounds good ....but you have to have a good way to allow those gasse's to escape. Primarilly through your exaust.Sometimes the trouble lyes in the least places that one would look!

Well the egr valve is brand new I just bought it and the catalatic converter and the muffler is brand new, I bought those about 5 months ago. So I dont think its any of that, but it could just be vacuum.

I would flush the rad out, it sounds like it might be plugged up pretty good and not allowing anough flow to keep it cool. Even a good flowing stock rad has trouble keeping up

Sounds to me like to got a vacuum leak. Its got the symptoms anyways. Pick up some new hoses and start replacing. It would be a good idea to replace them all anyways. Go over the wholse vacuum line system and make sure its all sealed up. It don't take much of a leak to make it run like shit. Good luck

It think your right, that the cooling system is pumping through only when it gets really hot.

The vacuum is tricky. I would measure the length of the vacuum lines, then add an inch, and go buy some standard vacuum lines and replace them at will. I had to do that on my 80. It is a PIA, but it fixed alot of the problems.

There is a drain plug in the block. It is on the driver's side, just above and back from the motor mount as I recall.

False alarm, I went back out there to try and start it and all it did was sputter and not idle like the points or something went out, how do you know if the points are out and how do you adjust the choke on a weber carb. Thanks Shane

Do this. Take the radiator cap off and start your truck. After it warms up look in and see if the water is flowing or not. If there is no flow, then you may have a water pump problem again, or the coils may be clogged.
