well since i installed the header on my stock 1.8l luv i can tell that the glass pack muffler does not have enough back pressure. so i want to change it out for something with more backpressure. a friend gave me a magnaflow muffler but you can see all the way through it, plus it has 3" inlet and outlet so i'd have to reduce down to 2". so i think i won't gain any backpressure from it. so i am concidering buying a turbo muffler, i can get one for $20, i know the turbo muffler would give good backpressure, but i'm not sure which i would get the best performance from. i know a 4 cylinder really needs a certain amout of backpressure or you start losing torque. oh and i don't have a catalytic converter.

I would go with the Turbo Muffler. Had lots of experience with em. A friend had one on his Datsun truck, and worked great. My friend had two on his 68' Impala 396, it was great, awesome sound, enough that when he was at the strip and had er punched she was loud, then as soon as he took his foot of the gas, it would backfire and snap and crackle even louder then when under full acceleration!! 8O Its was freakin awesome!! Those were a bit burnt out too though, but im sure they would provide adequate back pressure for a 1.8L. But they do tend to burn out fast.

I have a header and no cat on my '79 and I used Flowmaster. They came out with a 60's series muffler made for 4 and 6 cylinder motors a while back so I picked one up. It's worth every penny, i'd use a 2 inch inlet with a three inch out if I did it again though, I used 2 in and 2 out and I wish it was a little louder, it still crackles and pops when you downshift or let off the gas and sounds pretty damn neat at idle. Performance is great, I have only noticed more power

honeslty try out the glass pack, the flow helps ALOT at high rpm which is where this motor should be run anyway. When i freed up the exsaust on my luv i did notice it no longer made good torque below 2,000rpm. I didnt realy think too much of it becouse it pulls perty well up to 6,000rpm 8)

How much back pressure is standard to have the engine run right? I am not exactly seeing it in the book.
